Camp Abilities Tucson Teaming with AAABVI -
Camp Abilities is a comprehensive developmental sports camp for children in elementary, middle and high school
who are blind, deaf-blind or multiply disabled. This camp provides a 1:1 instructional situation for each child.
This camp will provide various sporting and recreational activities for 30 participants, age 6-19 with visual impairments
and multiple disabilities. They vary in socio-economic status, ethnic background and level of skills and abilities.
Campers will participate in a long list of physical activities such as wrestling, track and field, goalball, tandem biking,
in-line skating, aquatics, ice skating, weight training, rock climbing, bocce, golf, horseback riding, billiards,
bowling and beep baseball. A detailed task analysis is developed for each skill required for each sport.
These assessment sheets are sent to parents and physical education teachers, to assist in defining ability and to
encourage physical activity throughout the upcoming year. First, and foremost, our purpose is to empower children with sensory
impairments and multiple disabilities to be physically active and productive members of their schools, communities and society in general.
Second, is to train undergraduate and graduate students how to teach sports and recreational activities to children with sensory impairments.
Lastly, to continue research in a variety of areas that benefit kids with visual impairments and blindness.
